Tips to Search Engine Success

Things to do:
  1. Use the <title>...</title> tags to add a title to each web page. Titles should be 40 to 60 characters, including spaces, and should contain primary keywords once or twice. The title should be contained within the head tags.
  2. Directly below the title, create a keyword rich description of up to 250 characters, including spaces, wrapped inside the <description>...</description> tags.
  3. Create a sitemap or, better still, create one and submit it to Google.
  4. Use plenty of keywords in the body of each web page, and use the keywords multiple times. A keyword density of between 5% and 20% is probably about right.
  5. Put important keywords towards the top of each page.
  6. Put keywords inside heading, bold, or italic tags to emphasize them.
  7. Include keywords in hyperlinks.
  8. Put keywords in image ALT tags.
  9. Put keywords inside bulleted lists.
  10. Use long hyperlinks and include keywords in them.
  11. Place keywords throughout the whole site.
  12. Use between 100 and 250 words on each web page.
Things to not do:
  1. Do not use JavaScript to generate navigation buttons etc, as search engines will probably ignore it.
  2. Avoid putting text inside images.
  3. Don't use images for navigation.
  4. Avoid using frames if you can.
  5. Avoid using Flash.
  6. Avoid having pages that do not link to anywhere else - dangling pages.
  7. Avoid restructuring your site if you can. If you have to, make sure that you use permanent redirects so that search engine spiders can find the new locations of your web pages.
  8. Don't pack your web pages with keywords. If you have a page that contains the same keyword hundreds of times, search engines won't take too kindly to it.
